or an elephant or something
this dude flies about above the coast with his trunk dangling into the sea, grabbing seaweed and eating it. He's kept afloat by huge sacs of extremely light gas and flies about with fins.
As far as the art goes, it's masterfully drawn, I've always wanted to try something like that.
Um, now I hope you realize that he's incredibly front heavy. The head, trunk & tentibles are all elongated and heavy. Thing is, it'd probably lean forwards unless his head was also filled with the light air. And also... what is it that evolutionarily motivated such a heavy species for floating?
I don't mean to be shooting lots of holes into your great drawing, it's just... biologically impossible. Something of an evolution of an elephant wouldn't work, yet something develouping such a similarity to that creature on it's own wouldn't be very effective.
Only possibility that comes to mind: mad lab experiment set free. Beyond that, nothing makes sense.
I like the monochrome of it, it's so sinewy and fleshy. It's like a real creature from something like grays anatomy [a good book, by the way, to learn muscular tension drawing & the like] and it seems like you're an explorer finding it for the first time. Heh. You know, call it inspiration, call it a whim, but I'm gonna go draw my own kind of creature that floats. I hope you'll check it out when I finish.
Until then, enjoy the ! ^_^
Thanks for your detailed reply! You're absolutely right, this would never work in reality, I vaguely thought about getting elements that would work on a local scale, but like you pointed out they don't make sense as a whole. I'll take your points into the next iterations of this design.

Great and awesome work!!! But hard to say what is it...
It is like a surrealistic portret of some creature...
